QUESS Project Enters Engineering Phase

Editor: | Dec 17 , 2012

QUESS Project took an important step forward with the project comes to engineering Phase, announced on 10th Dec. at a mobilization meeting held in National Space Science Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

As one of the seven satellite projects of the Strategic Pioneer Program on space science, “Quantum Experiments at Space Scale”(QUESS) was among the first officially initiated satellite projects.

"Under the guidance of chief scientists and engineering professionals, the QUESS project has splendidly finished its first stage, laying a solid foundation for future work”, commented Yin Hejun, Vice President of CAS, adding that the future work of QUESS is of great difficulty and requires painstaking efforts as such heavy task must be finished within a very limited time.

Based on the high precision acquiring, tracking and pointing systems, the QUESS project is expected to test an experimental quantum key distribution for future secure communication and establish a large-scale experimental quantum communication network. QUESS will also carry out a satellite-to-ground quantum entanglement distribution and quantum teleportation experiment, testing the non-locality of quantum mechanics.

The QUESS project will be coordinated by National Space Science Center, CAS with participation of several other institutes and working units, such as China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, and Shanghai Engineering Center for Microsatellites.
