2011 ICSSSW Conference Held in Hangzhou

  2011 International Conference on Storms, Substorms, and Space Weather (ICSSSW) was held in Hangzhou, China, Sept 18-23, 2011. The conference was hosted by National Space Science Center and tremendous support was offered by Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Natural Science Foundation of China and China National Space Administration.

  2011 International Conference on Storms, Substorms, and Space Weather (ICSSSW) is an important scientific meeting in space physics held in China, after the 2009 International Conference on Storms. There are 8 sessions for the conference and the attending experts and young research fellows had heated discussion on storm, substorm and space weather which deepens the understanding on a variety of issues. Akasofu, the one who initiated the word substorm, delivered a popular science report on aurora substorm observation and study from the past to the present. The meeting has significant role to play in providing platform for mutual learning and communication for young research fellows, inspiring new research and consequently promoting the young research fellows’ interest and enthusiasm. The conference also will exert positive influence on the development of Chinese space physics which will improve the profile of Chinese space science community in the international arena.

  The convener of the conference is Wang Chi, Deputy Director of National Space Science Center and Joe Kan from Alaska University at Fairbanks. There are 60 experts and young research fellows participating in the conference from home and abroad.

  The ICSSSW 2011 is the second conference of the International Conference Series on Critical Problems in Space Science to be held in China every other year. The goal of the series is to promote creativity and original ideas of young researchers to foster new directions, new understandings of critical problems in space science.
