(CSSAR BEIJING) “A climax was reached with the successive launches of the two Chinese Double Star satellites - developed in less than two years - in December 2003 and July 2004 that were to offer a very important complement to the fleet of the four CLUSTER spacecraft”, so was written by Roger-Maurice Bonnet, former Director of Space Science Projects at the European Space Agency (ESA) and Executive Director of International Space Science Institute (ISSI), in his article International Cooperation of Space and China published in International Talent on May 12th 2011.

Professor Bonnet recalled the dramatic beginning of cooperation in space science with China and viewed the cooperation with China as “most fascinating and most productive adventure”. If the cooperation of Double Star Program marked the initiation of the cooperation between China and European Space Agency, the successful Beijing 2006 Scientific Assembly of COSPAR is another living example of the cooperation success between China’s space research community and those in other countries. Professor Bonnet remarked that, “more than 2000 scientists travelled and met in Beijing for a little more than a week and could get a measure of the strength, enthusiasm and youth of their Chinese colleagues.” 

In the development of its future space program, Professor Bonnet suggested China to open its future programs to international cooperation and he commented that one of the strength of the European and American model was the clarity of its management structure and of its approaches.
