SCOSTEP's 13th Quadrennial Solar-Terrestrial Physics Symposium (STP 13), jointly organized by the Chinese Space Science Society and the State Key Laboratory of Space Weather, under the National Space Science Center (NSSC), was held in Xi'an, China, 13-18 Oct. 2014. More than 200 participants coming from 21 countries, such as Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Japan, Russia, United States, etc., attended the meeting.

Nat Gopalswamy, President of the Scientific Committee on Solar Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP) and professor from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, chaired the opening ceremony and bestowed the 2014 SCOSTEP Distinguished Scientist Award to Prof. Gordon Greeley Shepherd and 2014 SCOSTEP Distinguished Young Scientist Award to Dr. Jia Yue and Dr. Neel Savani.

During the symposium, 225 presentations were delivered including 3 keynote talks, 8 overview talks, 144 oral talks and 70 posters. These presentations involve the latest research results found in each key area of solar-terrestrial chain from the solar surface to the Earth's upper atmosphere. The presentations, taking the way by which the Sun affects Earth over various time scales as the research direction, focus on the climate and weather in the Sun-Earth system, and the variability of the solar activities and their terrestrial impact.

Several reports expanded from the solar terrestrial physics research to a broader context of star-planet interaction. In addition, a seminar is dedicated to the International Space Weather Meridian Circle Program (ISWMCP) to showcase the recent progress in the Meridian Project data analysis. During the seminar, participants discussed the joint observation, data sharing and joint research in the framework of ISWMCP.

Organized by SCOSTEP every four years, the Solar-Terrestrial Physics Symposium (STP) is an important platform for scientific exchanges in the field of solar terrestrial physics. SCOSTEP's 14th Solar-Terrestrial Physics Symposium will be held in Moscow in 2018.
