NSSC Honors 61 Top Scientists, Engineers and Administrative Staffs

61 top scientists, engineers and administrative staffs today received gold, silver and bronze medal, the highest honor bestowed by the National Space Science Center (NSSC) upon employees, for their outstanding contribution, research ingenuity as well as their moral spirit in space science research.

5 eminent scientists and engineers including 2 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), 1 Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) were honored as the gold medal recipients. Other 9 and 47 researchers and administrative staffs received silver and bronze medals at the award ceremony respectively.

"The reason why we are here today to honor these inspiring NSSC innovators is to express respect and gratitude to their lasting contribution to NSSC in major projects such as the manned space flight program, lunar exploration, applied satellites and the  strategic pioneer program on space science. Their combined efforts have long made NSSC great and successful. More importantly, by designing and awarding these medals, we want to further unleash and stimulate the innovative inspirit, the creative quality in our researchers, to finally realize the goal of erecting the new milestone in space exploration for the whole human being.” WU Ji, Director General of NSSC, said at the award ceremony.

Prof. WEI fengsi, Academician of CAS, made a short speech as the representative of awardees. And a lecture entitled Earth, Moon and Deep Space---the Past, Present and Future of Space Science Exploration was given by Prof. SUN Huixian, Deputy Chief Designer of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program.

The NSSC gold, silver, and bronze medal was created by the statute in 2013. Awarded annually, it recognizes individuals who have made lasting and prominent contributions to the cause of space science. Therefore, a committee was set up in 2013 to selects nominees on the basis of their extraordinary knowledge in and contributions to space science.

The medal is designed by Prof. TENG Fei at the Central Academy of Fine Art, China. The dually structure and overlapped star shape symbolize the awardees’ outstanding achievements in both science/technology and moral spirit in space research.
