International Forum for Young Space Scientists Successfully Held in Macao

The International Forum for Young Space Scientists (IFYSS) is being held at the Macao Science Center from October 22 to 25, 2024. The forum attracted nearly a hundred scientists from countries and regions including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Finland, Australia, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and the Chinese mainland.

On the morning of the 23rd, the opening ceremony of the forum was presided over by Ji WU, the president of Chinese Society of Space Research (CSSR). In the opening speech, Ji WU pointed out that science has no borders, and space science has become a stage for scientists to carry out international cooperation due to its peaceful, open and shared nature, as well as its contributions to new discoveries and scientific knowledge. He hoped that the forum would provide a platform for exchanges and cooperation and lay the foundation for future cooperation. Qiugang ZONG, director of the Space Science Institute of Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), extended a warm welcome to the guests and participants. He also introduced that Space Science Institute is dedicated to deep space exploration, science and technology innovation of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and the development of Macao science and technology, and expressed that MUST will continue to contribute to international exchanges and cooperation in space science.

Academicians and senior scientists from University of California, Santa Barbara, University of Colorado Boulder, European Space Agency, CSSR, National Space Science Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NSSC, CAS), National Central University of Taiwan, China, and MUST delivered keynote speeches. The speeches covered international and domestic space science satellite missions, science frontiers, current status and future prospects, etc., calling for further promotion of international exchanges and cooperation in space science, which aroused enthusiastic responses.

In the afternoon of the 23rd, the thematic sessions were scheduled to commence. Young space scientists in the thematic areas of heliospheric physics and Earth science from space, gave talks grouped into 7 thematic sessions, with in-depth exchanges and discussions on disciplinary frontiers, the new discoveries of space science missions, the progress of relevant modeling and technology, and future joint research.

As the part of the forum, participants of the forum will visit the related laboratories of MUST and The University of Hong Kong (HKU).

The forum is the first international conference for young space scientists held in Macao. It is co-organized by CSSR, MUST, NSSC, CAS, HKU, and International Space Science Institute-Beijing (ISSI-BJ), with MUST as the local host, and Macao Science Center as the supporter.

The forum provided an great academic gathering for global young space scientists, to share ideas, enhance mutual understanding, trust and friendship, strengthen connections, and lay an important foundation for future cooperation.
