The CAS-ABC Workshop on Space Science and Technology Held in Beijing

On April 25-26, 2019, the CAS-ABC Workshop on Space Science and Technology was held in Beijing. The workshop was jointly organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) within the framework of the cooperation agreement of the two academies. As the second of a series of bilateral workshops aiming for the promotion of bilateral exchanges in various fields, this workshop is devoted to space science and technology.

In the opening of the workshop, on behalf the Local Organizing Committee, Prof. WANG Chi, the Director General of NSSC, welcomed all the delegates from Brazil and China. Mr. WANG Zhenyu from Bureau of International Cooperation of CAS delivered welcome remarks and mentioned the cooperation in China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite which can be traced back 30 years ago, and the China-Brazil Joint Lab for Space Weather which kicked off officially in 2014. Mr. GAO Changlin, the Science and Technology Counselor of Chinese Embassy in Brazil, extended his warm welcome to the visiting Brazil delegation. “This year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Brazil, and China-Brazil scientific and technological cooperation will assume new momentum”, he remarked.

On behalf of the Brazilian delegation, Prof. GALVAO Ricardo, the Director of Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE), touched upon the cooperation history of the two countries in the field of space and wished that more cooperation would pop up.

The workshop attracted more than 30 participants from Brazilian and Chinese research institutions. On the Brazilian side, participants come from Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE), Technologic Institute of Aeronautics and Federal University of Minas Gerais. On the Chinese side, participants are from Bureau of International Cooperation of Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Space Science Center (NSSC), Innovation Academy for Microsatellites (IAMC), Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) and Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP).

Presentations and panel discussions were arranged within space science and technology field, e.g. space environment monitoring, earth science and applications from space, and microsatellite missions. Topics of presentations include space weather, earth observation, remote sensing applications, micorsat, cubesat and nanosat technologies etc.

In the discussion, both sides envisioned more cooperation opportunities based on the ongoing collaboration projects. Prof. WANG Chi proposed more solid cooperation in space science at the mission level. Prof. GALVAO echoed by stressing the importance of cooperation in science-driven missions.

After the workshop, the Brazilian delegation was invited for a technical visit to the Huairou Campus of National Space Science Center, where they visited the Electron Accelerators & Low Energy Ion and Electron Calibration System facilities, Concurrent Design Facilities as well as the Space Science Mission Hall.

The year of 2018 witnessed the official signing of cooperation agreement between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, entitled Agreement on Cooperation between the Chinese Academy of Sciences of the People's Republic of China and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences of the Federal Republic of Brazil. In the framework of the agreement, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences will alternately hold bilateral workshops and support personnel exchanges.
