Space Science Delegation from NAS SSB Visited NSSC
On June 18, 2013, a delegation of Space Studies Board (SSB), National Academy of Sciences (NAS), led by Prof. Charles F. Kennel, Chair of SSB, visited National Space Science Center (NSSC) and was received by Prof. WU Ji, Director General of NSSC. The delegation is on a return visit to Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) after Vice President of CAS Prof. YIN Hejun’s visit to NAS in 2011.
Prof. Charles F. Kennel delivered a talk on the topic of The Future of Human Space Exploration and Prof. David N. Spergel, Professor of Princeton University, delivered a talk on Cosmology after Planck. Professor WU Ji gave a brief introduction of NSSC and Strategic Pioneer Program on Space Science.
A bilateral meeting was held later on to discuss the possible areas open for cooperation. Both sides encouraged the concept of holding a biannual NAS-CAS Young Scientists Symposium on Space Science to create a network of connections between the best and brightest young scientists from the U.S. and China.
The Space Studies Board was established in 1958 to serve as the focus of the interests and responsibilities in space research for the National Academies. The SSB provides an independent, authoritative forum for information and advice on all aspects of space science and applications. It oversees advisory studies and program assessments, facilitates international research coordination, and promotes communications on space science and science policy between the research community, the federal government, and the interested public. The SSB also serves as the U.S. National Committee for the International Council for Science Committee on Space Research (COSPAR).
