Wang Daheng, Founding Father of China's Optical Engineering, Passed away
Beijing-July 21, 2011-Wang Daheng, Member of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering, a renowned scientist in optical engineering who made outstanding contributions to the development of atomic bomb, missile and artificial satellite, passed away in Beijing at the age of 96.
Wang, born in Tokyo on Feb. 26, 1915, leaves an indelible imprint on China’s precision optical instruments, including the country’s first electronic microscope and first laser device.
He held positions as Director General of the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, CAS, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Committee (CPPCC) of Jilin Province, President of CAS Branch in Changchun, Director General of the Division of Technological Sciences, CAS, Director General of the Center for Space Science and Applied Research of CAS, and Vice President of the China Association for Science and Technology etc. He was widely regarded as the founding father of China's optical engineering. He served as representative to the Twelfth National Congress of the Communist Party of China, representative to the Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth National People's Congress, and was member of the Third and Seventh National Committee of CPPCC.
