Title: Advances in Na Lidar Science and Technology

Lecturer: Chiao-Yao (Joe) She, Professor Emeritus, Colorado State University

Abstract:

The National Science Foundation in the US is supporting three Na lidar facilities; two similar systems were deployed in China, with one more being built with CNSF support. Using selected observational example senabled by existing Na lidars, I hope to explain why we need many Na and Rayleigh lidars at different locations. Since gravity waves remain the principle challenge in MLT dynamics, and its understanding requires observation of associated turbulence, for which much higher resolution (beyond the capability of existing lidars) is needed. In the second half of the talk, I will thus show a tease of high resolution data, estimate the measurement precisions of two proposed large Na lidar systems, and discuss the ongoing efforts in U.S., Germany and China to build Na lidar transmitters that could meet these challenges.
